Renewable Energy Acronyms You Should Know.
A Queensland Renewable Energy Zone. So, what’s that? Good question. In a let’s-get-the-ball rolling move towards a greener tomorrow, the Queensland Government tossed in $145 million in 2020 to nurture early-stage investments in three expansive Queensland regions, pictured below, with a burgeoning interest in renewable energy across the state.
Termed as the Queensland Renewable Energy Zones (QREZ), this financial injection helped lay the groundwork for ongoing renewable energy projects. The focus was on fortifying storage and transmission infrastructure to bolster the capacity for increased energy generation.
Jumping ahead to 2023, the draft Queensland Renewable Energy Zone Roadmap has made a big change. This detailed document lays out a clearer framework and definition for a Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) and links regions with Local Government Areas. The roadmap pinpoints 12 potential future REZs across Southern, Central, North, and Far North Queensland.
These potential REZs aren’t just random picks but are carefully chosen based on network capacity, project pipeline, and land use analysis. They act as central hubs connecting each REZ to the broader network. As each REZ moves through declaration, consultation, and development phases, the goal of a sustainable energy future in Queensland gets closer to reality.
