Mayor of Murweh Shire Council Shaun (Zoro) Radnedg has commended the Miles Government for their decisive action in stopping mining giant Glencore’s plan to pump carbon into the underground Great Artesian Basin.
“What a tremendous win for our communities. Thank you to the Queensland Premier, The Hon Steven Miles, for listening to us and making this decision,” said Mayor Radnedge.
“This kind of action should never be permitted. Most of Queensland depends on this basin in one way or another, and we cannot let a coal mine pump its waste into our water.”
Mayor Radnedge emphasised the potential dangers, stating, “For farmers, this could have had serious consequences, which would affect our entire state. It’s simply not worth the risk.”
The Mayor also thanked SWROC and the Western Alliance of Councils, along with all 77 Mayors who pledged their support if a favourable decision wasn’t reached. He thanked the LGAQ, Queensland Farmers Federation, and AgForce for their unwavering support in protecting the Great Artesian Basin.
“I would like to thank the other councils for joining us in this effort and for the tremendous support we received from the LGAQ, QFF, and AgForce, who have been instrumental in getting this issue in front of the right people,” said Mayor Radnedge.
“We have an obligation to protect our communities. We need a moratorium and legislation from the government to ensure this doesn’t happen again in the future.”
“This is a great result for us, and I am really happy that good sense prevailed. Once again, thank you to everyone who helped bring this issue to the fore,” concluded Mayor Radnedge.
