With Renewables, Buyer Beware.

Opinion column for Mayor of Banana Shire that appears in CQ Today.

The arrival of the renewable energy industry in our region has indeed been a game-changer, bringing forth exciting economic opportunities for the members of our community and welcoming new commercial players to our Shire. We are blessed with a wealth of diverse natural assets, including an abundance of sunshine, wind, and a well-established power delivery network. These resources have positioned us as a prime location for renewable energy development.

However, as we embrace this transformative shift, I must emphasise a timeless adage: buyer beware. This old phrase serves as a valuable reminder that when making any significant decision, especially in the complex realm of business and industry, it falls squarely on the buyer’s shoulders to ensure that everything is as it should be before sealing the deal. Once a transaction is concluded, the consequences, be they positive or negative, become the buyer’s responsibility. Have you ever heard of someone buying a car from a dubious dealership only to discover they’d purchased a lemon? That’s the essence of buyer beware.

While we would like to believe that all the companies, whether foreign or domestic, setting up shop in our Shire will operate with the utmost integrity and consideration for the long-term implications of their agreements and the welfare of our community, we must also acknowledge that realistically this may not always be the case. In the ever-evolving landscape of business, ownership can change, market dynamics can shift, and the original intentions of a company may evolve over time.

Therefore, I cannot stress enough the importance of seeking appropriate legal counsel when engaging with any of these firms. A seasoned legal expert can help you navigate the intricate details of agreements, contracts, and negotiations, ensuring that your and our community’s interests are adequately protected. They can scrutinize the fine print, identify potential pitfalls, and offer valuable insights that may not be apparent to the untrained eye.

In a world where change is constant, and the stakes are high, being informed and vigilant is the key to safeguarding your investments and our collective future. While we enthusiastically welcome the opportunities the renewable energy industry brings, we must also remain vigilant, ensuring that the promises made today will endure for generations to come. Together, as responsible stakeholders in our Shire of Opportunity, we can harness the potential of this industry while safeguarding our community’s well-being.
